On July 17, the one millionth patient record was entered into the Get With The Guidelines – Stroke (GWTG-Stroke) Patient Management ToolTM. This is a tremendous milestone in the American Heart Association’s commitment to quality care for patients with heart disease and stroke. GWTG-Stroke provides tools to help hospitals follow guideline-recommended therapies and as a result, can help save more lives.
The stroke module of GWTG was developed in 2003 to specifically address quality of care in the treatment of stroke patients. From 2003 to 2009, participation in Get With The Guidelines-Stroke grew from 99 hospitals to more than 1,280 currently representing more than 41 percent of acute care hospital beds in this country. Benefits to patients when hospitals join GWTG including best-practice medical care and longer adherence to drug and recovery regimes, have been confirmed in multiple studies. The GWTG program is a tangible example of how the AHA/ASA is helping improve the healthcare system one patient at a time.
In addition to this accomplishment, the team is quickly closing in on the two millionth patient record for all three of the Get With The Guidelines programs, and expects to have reached that target by September. Stay tuned for updates!
